Award-Winning Portland

PRICED FROM $649 PER PERSON
Portland is a real up-and-comer on the restaurant front. Considered the “Bay Area of the East”, it boasts of having more restaurants per capita than San Francisco. Tasting the dishes of award-winning chefs is the perfect excuse for a trip to Maine.
DAY ONE:
After checking into your well-located historic hotel near the waterfront, take some time to soak in the scenery of this quaint New England town. Dinner is a short walk away, so feel free to wear your walking shoes. Though the mastermind in the kitchen was named a Food and Wine Best Chef in 2007, this is not a high-powered, white tablecloth experience. Rather, you’ll enjoy a creative and fun evening in a casual setting.
DAY TWO:
The next morning, seek out one of the city’s wonderful bakeries to enjoy with your coffee. Your culinary tour guide will regale you with the colorful history of the area as you sample Maine-inspired foods and meander through charming brick streets. Lobster, blueberry preserves, handcrafted ales and the original whoopie pie are just some of the delights you’ll experience.
Stop in at Duckfat for incredible French fries (yes, fried in duck fat), as well as delightful sandwiches and salads. This funky little spot is owned by James Beard Award winner Rob Evans, also chef/owner of the more upscale Hugo’s.
Dinner is in a beautifully rehabbed warehouse, and features a gorgeous wood-burning oven and open kitchen. The dishes are simple and use the freshest ingredients, whether from the sea or the garden, and the bread is exceptional.
DAY THREE:
At brunch the next morning you’ll have difficulty deciding whether to try the breakfast or lunch items on the menu. Either way, you’ll end your trip on a delicious note.

FOOD WRITER SERIES
Mary Bloch loves to cook fun, healthful and stimulating meals, the more unusual the better. Researching which restaurants to visit is also a favorite hobby, and she relishes the payoff – visually appealing and palate-pleasing dishes. For years, she has been a resource of friends and family who want to know where to go, where to stay and where to eat. She has parlayed that expertise into a professional venture.
When Mary travels, the food experience is paramount and takes precedence over most sightseeing excursions. Her love for seeking out exciting spots has been instilled in and appreciated by her two sons, whose adventurous spirits have transformed her own journey in the kitchen. Though an attorney by trade, Mary’s love of cooking, combined with her passion for food and travel, led her to turn to food writing, which, according to her friends, is a natural fit.
