For more than 100 years, The Washington Hotel has attracted travelers and islanders to its historic splendor.
Inspired by the bustling activity of early-19th-century Detroit Harbor and the idyllic shoreline location, Captain Ben Johnson built the hotel to provide lodging for other captains who piloted ships through the Great Lakes. Natural environs afforded guests a chance to bathe and relax as well as hike, fish and boat. As the setting for everything from weddings to political meetings, the hotel became the social center of island life.
In 2001, The Washington Hotel was restored to its original 1904 floor plan. Today, The Washington Hotel maintains its bucolic appeal. The hotel remains devoted to its guests--creating a respite from the demands of city living without sacrificing modern conveniences.
