Day 1
Arrival in San Jose | All Ground Transportation Included You will receive a warm welcome to San Jose from your driver. He’ll meet you at the airport and transfer you to the one night stay at the Hotel Grano de Oro. All ground transportation is provided for you. You will be taken to each tour and outing and to your different hotels in clean, air-conditioned private vehicles.
Day 2
City Tour of San Jose | Restaurant Grano de Oro Dinner Chepe – as San José is affectionately known – quickly reveals its charms. A late afternoon guided tour will give you time for seeing the more historic neighborhoods, where colonial mansions have been converted into contemporary art galleries, refined international restaurants, and boutique hotels. Your guide will pick you up at the hotel and return you there in time for dinner. Restaurante Grano de Oro merges Costa Rican tropical with European cuisine under the expertise of our French chef Francis Canal. Once a simple cafe, this restaurant has evolved into one of San Jose’s finest dining establishments, frequented by locals and tourists alike. Dinner is a featured attraction at Grano de Oro. The ambiance is intimate and romantic, but with an Old World elegance that makes Grano de Oro inviting. The dinner menu ranges from the traditional to the sublime and your three-course dinner is served with a glass of wine or cocktail.
Day 3
Volcano Tour | Garden Tour | Tropical Lakeside Lunch Have a good breakfast in the hotel as you have an early start to your activity filled day. Trek to the summit of Volcán Irazú, near tree line, and the wind and volcanic activity will conspire to give the effect of a moonscape. There are several craters rimmed by gnarled, scorched trees, and lined with brilliantly colored rain fed mineral pools. Your next stop is at The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels Basilica), which was partially destroyed by an earthquake. The basilica has since been restored and constitutes a unique mix of colonial architecture with 19th century Byzantine style. A garden tour at Lankester Gardens slows down your morning. The gardens date back to the 1940s when the British naturalist and orchidologist, Charles H. Lankester, became interested in the study and culture of Costa Rica's plants. With dedication and much effort, the Lankester Botanical Garden has become one of the most active and important botanical institutions of the Neotropics. Lunch will be served at Casona de Cafetel, located on the banks of the majestic Lake Cachi in the Orosi Valley, set in the middle of a coffee plantation.
Day 4
Orosi Lodge | One Night After lunch you will arrive at Orosi Lodge for the evening, with dinner on your own. This charming Colonial style hotel sits in the “Orosi Valley” near Cartago in the Central Highlands. Orosi is a colonial town with plenty of charm and culture, and is home to the oldest church in all of Costa Rica. Whitewater rafting, hiking, trout fishing, and swimming are just a few of the activities available in Orosi, not to mention the two volcanic hot springs that lay in the center of town. The owners of the lodge can guide you to their favorite places, so you can enjoy Orosi like a local.
Day 5
Coffee Farm Tour | Lunch with a View Wake up and smell a coffee farm. Finca Organica Cristina is an organic shade-grown coffee farm, dedicated to producing the finest Arabica coffee while protecting and preserving native flora and fauna. This enchanting land provides important habitat for birds that breed in North America and winter in the tropics. All purchases directly support conservation efforts. Lunch is at Restaurante y Pollo a la Leña el Clon, a family owned restaurant with a rustic dining room and views of the surrounding mountains and volcanoes.
Day 6
Cariblue Beach & Jungle Resort | 3 Nights Three nights in Puerto Viejo at The Cariblue Beach & Jungle Resort offers a relaxing environment in the untainted and colorful Playa Cocles. Together with neighboring Playa Negra, Playa Chiquita, and Punta Uva (one of the most beautiful and most famous beaches facing the Southern Caribbean Sea of Costa Rica), the resort blends an unforgettable experience of an eco-friendly lodge with centuries-old trees in the heart of the rainforest near the Wildlife Refuge Gandoca-Manzanillo. Thanks to this extraordinary location, about 120 bird species are observable in the hotel garden.
Day 7
Stashus Con Fusion Dinner Dinner at Stashus Con Fusion will wow your senses. It is a lively little spot that features dishes where customers “order by sauce.” Select your meat and vegetables and then select one of their special sauces to accompany the meal. Sauces include: Thai peanut, Mexican chipotle, Indonesian-Caribbean curry, Jamaican jerk-style, and Malaysian-guayaba curry. The chef specializes in organic food, and it is known as a great place for Vegans and Vegetarians. The restaurant also features very unique entertainment. Enjoy your choice of wine, beer, or a specialty drink of the restaurant.
Day 8
Canopy Zip Line Adventure | Evening at Leisure Energize your morning with a canopy zipline tour which includes ten aerial platforms and twelve on land, for a total of 2,760 meters of ziplining adventure. Once you climb the seventh platform, you will not touch the ground again until the final run, enabling a spectacular bird’s eye view of the jungle. At each platform stop your nature guide will continue to explain the curiosities found in this lush environment. On the last platform, you will have the choice of making a descent to the ground by rappelling, by means of a Tarzan swing, or by zipline cable. There are optional tours for you should this adventure not be appealing … you may choose a chocolate tour or massage body treatment. Your afternoon and evening meals are on your own, and our team will guide you to places favored by locals, so you may explore with confidence.
Day 10
Animal Rescue Center | Chocolate Lady | Waterfall Hike Get ready for a little bit of education on local animals and cacao, followed by a short jaunt through the jungle to a waterfall. You will learn how the center serves as refuge and rehabilitation for animals (monkeys, sloths, snakes, wild cats, and more), as well as have the opportunity to hold and play with the monkeys living there. A visit to an indigenous family to learn about the production of cacao follows the animal center visit. We end our day by hiking to a beautiful local waterfall where you may enjoy a swim.
Day 11
Hands-on Caribbean Cooking Class A late afternoon cooking class with Veronica will immerse you even more deeply into the Caribbean spirit. She will lead you in a hands-on class of traditional Caribbean foods, and you will enjoy the fruits of your labor as your dinner is served afterwards. Veronia will prepare local natural drinks to go along with your dinner, as no alcohol will be served.
Day 12
River Rafting | Riverside Picnic Lunch | Grano de Oro If you are looking for an exciting outdoor adventure with lots of laughs and some great scenery along the way, white water rafting down the Pacuare River is not to be missed. This is an adrenaline pumping day-long adventure including breakfast and lunch. An ultimate blend of wilderness exposure and invigorating excitement, the Pacuare River is world famous for its pristine beauty. A true river gorge, flanked by steep, green walls, its waterfalls cascade into the river from both sides as colorful, tropical birds fly overhead. There's a chance you may even see sloths, monkeys, or the elusive jaguar! Amazing views of this virgin tropical rainforest appear before your eyes as you make your descent down the river. The white water is equally exciting; the number of rapids covered on this outstanding trip makes it one of the most memorable river trips you will ever experience. We will stop for a first class buffet lunch, a picnic at the prettiest beach on the river. The second half of the ride is more relaxed as the river enters the true lower Caribbean, the surroundings take on a jungle character, and the wildlife becomes more plentiful. The raft trips ends at our Exploration Center, where you may shower, change, and relax before your trip back to the Hotel Grano de Oro for your last night’s stay.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Currency is being quoted?
All prices are quoted in USD. The price quoted on the first page of a tour is always per person, double occupancy.
What does Double Occupancy mean?
Two persons traveling together, and staying in the same room. Tour prices are normally quoted as “per person, double occupancy” in case two people are traveling together and staying in the same room, but paying separately. The cost of the lodging is also shared by two people, thereby reducing costs. This could be a married couple, two friends or relatives.
What is a Single Supplement?
Whenever a person travels alone, the cost of their lodging cannot be shared by another person. When tour products are priced, they are normally stated as “per person, double occupancy.” Whenever a guest occupies a room as a solo, the whole cost of the lodging must be incurred by that one individual. Tour companies accommodate this by charging a Single Supplement. Epitourean does its best to keep the single supplement as low as possible, but it is a real cost that tour companies must absorb, and must pass along to the single traveler.
If I am a Solo Traveler, will I be paired with another person?
Epitourean never pairs a solo traveler with another person without a special request. If you book Single Occupancy, you will have a room entirely to yourself. However, should you wish to be paired with another solo traveler to save on the single supplement, you may make this request. We cannot guarantee that we can accommodate such requests, since it would take another solo traveling on the same tour for the same dates. But if requested, we will certainly try.
Is a Deposit required to book a tour or getaway?
Yes. We require a 30% refundable deposit for all our domestic (USA and Canada) getaways and tours, and a 50% refundable deposit for international destinations outside of the USA and Canada. Reservations made for destinations within the USA and Canada must be paid in full 30 days prior to departure. Reservations made for destinations outside of the USA and Canada must be paid in full 60 days prior to departure.
Does Epitourean (and Edible Destinations) offer Travel Insurance?
At this time, Epitourean does not offer travel protection directly. However, we highly encourage the purchase of travel insurance or travel protection in case something unexpected occurs that forces you to cancel your trip after the cancellation period has lapsed, or should you experience a medical emergency while traveling outside of the USA or Canada.
Are flights included in the tour price?
No. Flights are never included in the price of our land-only tours. Epitourean does not provide air, rail or sea travel, unless expressly noted in the itinerary.
May I give a culinary tour as a gift?
Yes. Epitourean has a special program designed specifically for this purpose. Our Gift Packages come with features such as special messages to the recipient, gift box option, gift link (without pricing), and floating dates (should you not know when the gift recipient wants to travel). Contact a Culinary Travel Specialist at 800-390-3292 or customerservice@epitourean.com to receive additional information about this unique offering.
May we request separate beds if sharing a room?
Yes. In most cases, Epitourean can accommodate a request for two beds to be placed in one room. Just make sure to make this request in the comments section of the reservation process.
Does each guestroom have a private bathroom?
Yes. Epitourean partners with the best lodging options in each destination, and private (en suite) bathrooms are a requirement. However, you should inquire as to the configuration of bathrooms should you have a special need. For example, some tours include accommodations in medieval villages, where either a shower or bath(but maybe not both) are present.
Can your tours accommodate my dietary restrictions?
In almost all cases, Epitourean can accommodate dietary choices and restrictions. But we do request that you ask a Culinary Travel Specialist prior to making your reservation so that we can assess your individual situation.
What is your Cancellation Policy?
Our full cancellation policy is stated in the Terms and Conditions when making your reservation. Cancellations with a full refund are allowed up to 31 days or more prior to departure for USA and Canada tours, or up to 61 days or more prior to departure for international tours. No refund is allowed 30 days or less prior to departure for USA and Canada tours, or 60 days or less prior to departure for international tours.
