Mississippi Delta Culinary Retreat
The Mississippi Delta is a food lover's paradise, a veritable melting pot of culinary traditions brought by the African-Americans, Italians, Chinese and Lebanese who along with northern European settlers populated this land. Adventures through the Delta can lead you to discover everything from fried catfish dishes to the region's famous homemade hot tamales to some of the best fine dining to be had.
Experience the rich culture and heritage of the Delta through its vast offerings of cuisine and culture. Civil War artifacts, Indian mounds, juke joints, Blues museums, plantation homes, literary collections and Kermit the Frog are all at your fingertips. Leave the beaten path to view the many miles of cotton, soybean and corn fields along with the thousands of unlikely ponds where a majority of the world's catfish is raised. And don't forget the mighty Mississippi River which shaped and continues to shape this magic, mysterious land.
The Alluvian Hotel - King or Queen Room
The resort's guestrooms are a clear expression of the Mississippi Delta. The colors and textures of Delta earth, foliage and sky were the inspiration in designing their rooms. All spaces incorporate custom designed furnishings and accessories. Pampering at the hotel begins with irresistible amenities including nightly turndown service, Mario Russo bath and body products, oversized marble bathrooms, plush bed and bath linens, minibars, complimentary wireless Internet, and an award winning art collection by Mississippi artists.
Fine Dining at Giardina’s Restaurant
Giardina's, one of the Mississippi Delta's most historic restaurants, was founded in 1936 by Joseph Giardina, in Greenwood, Mississippi. A unique blend of sophistication and warmth, Giardina's is the perfect setting for any event. Seating consists of fourteen private booths and the large dining room opens onto a beautiful courtyard. The restaurant's interior space and state-of-the-art kitchen were designed by world-renowned architects. Considerable effort was made to retain the character and charm of the original Giardina's, but the white tablecloths, fine crystal and premium Viking cutlery add the feeling of elegance one would expect from a fine dining restaurant in a large metropolitan area.
A Southern Breakfast is Now Served!
Mornings begin as you awaken to the aroma of a gourmet breakfast served at your leisure. A dining experience in and of itself, you will be tempted with fabulous entrees as well as fresh fruits and juices. The Hotel proudly features traditional Southern options with a focus on local ingredients. What could be better than a hearty breakfast of country ham with red-eye gravy, grits and buttermilk biscuits? An early morning taste of the Deep South is a great way to begin your day of exploration!
Hands-On Cooking Class at the Viking Culinary Studios
These hands-on classes give you an opportunity to get your hands dirty. Working closely with an instructor and using the finest Viking professional appliances, cookware and cutlery, you and a small group of classmates learn cooking techniques by actually preparing the menu items. Select from a wide array of exciting classes covering subjects such as ethnic cuisines, basic techniques of cooking, baking, vegetarian, and cocktail and dinner parties…whatever you choose, you are sure to have a blast. From the novice to the experienced cook, over 70,000 students including kids, moms and dads, business professionals, and others come alone, or together with friends, to attend classes each year. If you love to cook, entertain, or just appreciate the pleasure of great food, these classes are the perfect opportunity to indulge your passions.
Someone stole the Cornbread from my Dressing Cookbook
Somebody Stole the Cornbread from My Dressing: A Hilarious Comparison between the North and South through Recipes and Recollections (The Overmountain Press) is the culinary collaboration between two friends who grew up in Rosedale, Mississippi: Elizabeth Gourlay Heiskell and Susanne Young Reed. Comparing the blatant cultural differences between Susanne’s adopted small town in Pennsylvania to that of Elizabeth’s utterly social Mississippi Delta (where life revolves around food), each chapter makes you grateful for the time-honored traditions of the South¬¬––and hungry!
