A Savory Indulgence in the Shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains
As you drive up the laneway to The Clifton Inn, you may think you catch a glimpse of Thomas Jefferson himself strolling up to the handsome white-columned manor, built on 100 acres once owned by his son-in-law Thomas Mann Randolph. You'll enjoy a delectable afternoon tea in the sitting room, and then perhaps take a quiet walk around the private lake.  Later, you may enjoy a wine tasting before you dine that evening on the bounty of local Virginia ingredients transformed into a sumptuous multi-course combination of worldly flavors by the chef. The luxury of your surroundings will ensure a peaceful sleep until you venture into the Verandah breakfast room, next morning for a delicious continental breakfast.

Check-in with Chef Tucker to begin your day by foraging outside the Inn for delicious things growing wild in the great outdoors that can be used to flavor your meals in surprising ways. You may visit his vegetable garden on the way back to begin your hands-on Cooking Class where he will share his secrets of cooking with Virginia wine and beer.  Following your class you will dine at the brand new theater-style Chef's Counter in the kitchen, where you just worked with your team! After a well-earned rest, you may want to explore some of the historic attractions within minutes of your Inn, before returning, perhaps, to another Afternoon Tea. Or you could simply curl up with your new copy of the Relais & Châteaux cookbook that evening and order room service. Either way, you’ll fall asleep in style and elegance.

Clifton Inn

Clifton Inn - Luxury Guestroom map

The Clifton Inn, a luxurious Relais & Châteaux hotel, has been meticulously restored with a sensibility that is both quietly stylish and extremely sensitive to the historic nature of the place. There are 178 guest rooms and suites in the main house and scattered in various out-buildings and on nearby Collina Farm. Your room, complete with it’s own decanter of Madeira, is appointed with all modern conveniences and luxuries including high-speed wireless internet, Bose sound system, Mascioni linens and Molton Brown amenities, and is individually decorated in a unique and distinctive way. Some have fireplaces or private terraces. There is an infinity pool and waterfall, croquet lawn, clay tennis courts, and secluded trails just waiting for you. The Relais & Châteaux motto is well-reflected here: “character, courtesy, calm, charm and cuisine.”
Five-course Tasting Menu with Wine at the Chef’s Counter

Five-course Tasting Menu with Wine at the Chef’s Counter

Get ready for a Culinary Cabaret! Your Culinary Team at The Clifton Inn is committed to supporting local family farms and sharing the regions’ bounty with you. Your Tasting Menu is divided into four sections: Delicate, Light, Full-Bodied and Robust from which you will make your choices. Be certain to include a selection of Artisanal Cheeses and of course, always leave room for dessert!
A Continental Morning Full of Delights

A Continental Morning Full of Delights

Start your mornings with the temptations prepared so lovingly for you by Chef Colleen, in the Clifton kitchens while you’ve been sleeping. You will begin with freshly squeezed juices and a cup of steaming tea or coffee. Then you’ll have a selection of fresh and delicious cinnamon rolls, croissants and muffins to tempt you. Don’t forget the jams and jellies of course. Your setting is the beautiful garden view room overlooking the surrounding terraces and fields. A perfect start to your peaceful day at Clifton, or as a base for exploring the Charlottesville area.
Relaxing Afternoon Tea

Relaxing Afternoon Tea

The pastry chef here is renowned for the delicacies that wind up as part of your elegantly served afternoon tea. The selections may be different each afternoon, but all are served with wonderful pots of fragrant teas in the delightful sitting room of the main house. Catch up on your favorite book or enjoy the company of your fellow guests as you unwind from that other life, now fading into a distant memory.
Hands-On Cooking Class with Chef Tucker Yoder

Hands-On Cooking Class with Chef Tucker Yoder

After you’ve finished your continental breakfast, you will report to Chef Tucker, to begin an adventure that will be quite an education. He will start by leading you outside to forage for things that can be added to your meal to enhance it; things that you may not have known were edible! An education awaits. A visit to the garden on the way back is possible and then, it’s onto the kitchen to get cooking! You will be shown some great techniques, and learn new ways to use beer and wine in recipes to impress your friends at home.
Monticello – Behind the Scenes Tour

Monticello – Behind the Scenes Tour

Have you always wanted to go upstairs at Monticello? These exclusive, daytime tours take you behind the scenes: to bedrooms once occupied by members of the Jefferson family on the second floor; to the iconic Dome Room on the third floor; and to the new, interactive "Crossroads" exhibition under the house. You'll see unique interior architectural features, learn about ongoing historic restoration efforts, and gain insight into what one of Jefferson's granddaughters called "the bustle and hurry" of life at Monticello.
