A Gastronomic Journey in the South of France

Savor the sights, sounds and tastes of Languedoc, during this 6 night, all-immersive culinary delight in the South of France! Languedoc’s cooking style embraces many influences from the neighboring regions and embodies the diversity of the landscape. This coastal region produces light fruity olive oils, aromatic garlic, and fragrant herbs growing wild in the sun-parched garrigues (low-growing vegetation on the limestone hills of the Mediterranean coast) – all of which contribute to the foundation of the local fare. Markets are filled by the seasons, full of luscious tomatoes, crisp purple artichokes, wild asparagus and sun-ripened peaches, apricots and figs. It's here that you'll find some of the world’s most delicious cheeses – the best known of all is the legendary Roquefort, aged in the lime caves of the Causse. Delectable fresh caught seafood is often sold right out of small fishing boats, ready to be used in typical French stews or enjoyed stuffed, raw, in escabèche and fritters, or simply grilled over subtly fragrant grapevines. Hands-on cooking classes and dinners await you each and every evening. Chef Anne will share regional recipes and some of her favorite cooking secrets, while you learn to prepare French meals with seasonal ingredients like bolles de picolat with cèpes and olives, lamb navarin with spring vegetables, duck magret with figs and wild mushrooms, and traditional fruit tarts. Savor local wines and take home all the recipes for the dishes you have created, to bring a taste of Languedoc to your own table!

Day 1
Arrival & Transportation to Maison de Quarante | Welcome Dinner You will be picked up at Mediteranee Airport in Montpellier, or at Beziers or Narbonne train station, and driven over to Maison de Quarante B&B for the week. Once checked-in, you'll be welcomed with an aperitif followed by dinner. Your welcome dinner, served in the romantic orangery or in the dining room, will be an introduction to the local gastronomy. Depending on the season, you may enjoy a spring vegetable salad made of local asparagus, peas, fava, and herbs in a delicate lemony dressing followed by a daube of tender lamb with olives and rosemary simmered in a robust red wine. You will enjoy your first cheese tasting, as well. Dessert might include a fraisier, the quintessential spring cake made with local strawberries.
Day 2
Morning Breakfast Buffet Breakfast buffet is laid out in the dining-room every day, offering tea or coffee, bread from the local boulangerie, cheese and ham from the region, homemade granola with yogurt, and seasonal fruit and vegetables.
Winery Tour | Picnic Lunch | 1st Hands-on Cooking Class with Dinner Enjoy a private guided winery tour followed by a comprehensive wine tasting. You will learn about the indigenous grapes of the region, the natural environment in which this particular wine is produced, and understand the harvesting process. A variety of samples will whet your palate for the week ahead! Following the tasting, you'll enjoy a delightful picnic lunch at the winery. Once back at your hotel, you'll have time to relax in the afternoon before your first evening cooking class and dinner. The menu might include Bolles de Picolat, the traditional catalan dish of meatballs, cèpes and olives. You will also learn how to make tapenade and profiteroles with a caramel sauce. The wines featured during the meal will be from the St. Chinian region.
Day 3

Visit to Beziers & Les Halles Market | Wine Bar Lunch | Canal du Midi Cruise | 2nd Hands-on Cooking Class with Dinner After breakfast, you’ll head out for a leisurely stroll through Beziers. Here, you’ll visit the historic city center, as well as the famous "Allée Paul Riquet” esplanade and its many shops. At Les Halles Market in Beziers, you’ll shop for ingredients for this evening’s meal and cooking class. Then, head to the beautiful Canal du Midi for a cruise and lunch. The canal will take you by some magnificent sites of the Languedoc, such as the canal bridge outside of Beziers and the series of nine locks, which were first built in 1679. On your way back, you’ll visit an olive oil mill. Once back at the hotel, you’ll have some free time before this evening's cooking class and dinner, featuring all the fresh ingredients picked up in Beziers! You’ll learn to trim artichoke for the recipe "à la barrigoule" simmered in wine and herbs, and to de-bone poultry for pan roasted squabs confits with wild mushrooms. Dessert will be the French classic pear tart with almond cream. Dinner will include wines from the Minervois region.
Day 4

A Truffle Day! | 3rd Hands-on Cooking Class with Dinner This morning, head to a wine estate for a special truffle day. First meet a truffle expert at a recently-renovated old wine estate. You will learn how truffles are grown, how to cultivate them, and what to look for when purchasing this delicacy. Next, follow a trained truffle hunting dog into the nearby woods. Savor the opportunity to sample different types of truffles following their season. The cooking class of the day will take place at the estate and it will be all about truffles. After a time to relax, dinner will be at a wine bar for a relaxed evening.
Day 5

Discover Narbonne | Market Visit | Restaurant Lunch | Winery Visit & Tasting | 4th Hands-on Cooking Class with Dinner Following breakfast, we set off for the town of Narbonne to tour and shop the bustling indoor market in the center of town. Thursday is the best day to visit this lively, colorful, southern market. Here, you’ll discover local, seasonal produce, clothing and more, spread all around the center of town. Lunch will be held at a restaurant featuring only the best, seasonal, fresh ingredients. Before heading back, we’ll stop in La Clape – the largest natural conservation area in Languedoc Roussillon. Here you’ll have time for a wine tasting at one of La Clape's best wineries. In the evening, you’ll participate in another hands-on cooking class followed by dinner. You will prepare fresh Mediterranean squid with chickpeas and chorizo; you may also prepare rabbit loins stuffed with spinach and wrapped in French bacon.
Day 6

Pezenas Town Tour | Restaurant Lunch | Olive Oil Mill Visit and Tasting | 5th Hands-On Cooking Class | Festive Farewell Dinner On your last day, you’ll enjoy a visit through the magnificent town of Pézenas. Pézenas is a city full of art and history, boasting a rich heritage and beautiful narrow streets lined with workshops and restaurants. Pézenas is home to numerous mansions of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, each featuring unique architectural details from their century. Lunch will be held at one of the town’s most popular restaurants. Before heading back, you'll stop off at an olive mill and a winery to enjoy a delicious tasting and tour of each property.Your final evening comes too soon, but there’s still time for one last cooking class. In the fall the menu might include a delicate cèpes tart followed by duck magret with a Banyuls vinegar sauce with roasted figs, and an apple croustade redolante of orange water and eau de vie du Languedoc, accompanied by fruity Fauger wines. Gather round to enjoy this final festive farewell dinner to conclude your week in Languedoc.
Day 7

Check-Out and Departure Time flies when you’re having so much fun, but alas…it is time to check out and depart this delicious, “Edible Destination.” Remember, short excursion packages are often available in nearby cities or historic destinations. Maison de Quarante
Built in 1805, and recently restored, Maison de Quarante B&B is located in the heart of a hill top village. When you enter the doors, you’ll step back in time into a spacious decorative hallway which leads to a grand staircase and bedrooms above. The beautiful dining room with adjoining drawing room has French doors leading out onto the terrace where you can enjoy your daily breakfast. A swimming pool is situated away from the house at the bottom of the garden, surrounded by palm trees and a generous seating area. Each morning starts with a classic continental breakfast, including freshly baked baguettes, croissants, delicious local cheese and ham, homemade granola, coffee and tea.

What Currency is being quoted?
The Currency Code is listed directly after the published amount. If it states USD, then the quoted price is in United States Dollars. If it states CAD, then the quoted price is in Canadian Dollars. If it states EUR, then the quoted price is in European Union Dollars…etc. However, please note that all charges are processed in USD, and Epitourean’s Merchant Bank automatically calculates the currency conversion on the day of the charge.
What does Double Occupancy mean?
Two persons traveling together, and staying in the same room. Tour prices are normally quoted as “per person, double occupancy” in case two people are traveling together and staying in the same room, but paying separately. The cost of the lodging is also shared by two people, thereby reducing costs. This could be a married couple, two friends or relatives.
What is a Single Supplement?
Whenever a person travels alone, the cost of their lodging cannot be shared by another person. When tour products are priced, they are normally stated as “per person, double occupancy.” Whenever a guest occupies a room as a solo, the whole cost of the lodging must be incurred by that one individual. Tour companies accommodate this by charging a Single Supplement. Epitourean does its best to keep the single supplement as low as possible, but it is a real cost that tour companies must absorb, and must pass along to the single traveler.
If I am a Solo Traveler, will I be paired with another person?
Epitourean never pairs a solo traveler with another person without a special request. If you book Single Occupancy, you will have a room entirely to yourself. However, should you wish to be paired with another solo traveler to save on the single supplement, you may make this request. We cannot guarantee that we can accommodate such requests, since it would take another solo traveling on the same tour for the same dates. But if requested, we will certainly try.
Is a Deposit required to book a tour or getaway?
Yes. We require a 30% refundable deposit for all our domestic (USA and Canada) getaways and tours, and a 50% refundable deposit for international destinations outside of the USA and Canada. Reservations made for destinations within the USA and Canada must be paid in full 30 days prior to departure. Reservations made for destinations outside of the USA and Canada must be paid in full 60 days prior to departure.
Are flights included in the tour price?
No. Flights are never included in the price of our land-only tours. Epitourean does not provide air, rail or sea travel, unless expressly noted in the itinerary.
May I give a culinary tour as a gift?
Yes. Epitourean has a special program designed specifically for this purpose. Our Gift Packages come with features such as special messages to the recipient, gift box option, gift link (without pricing), and floating dates (should you not know when the gift recipient wants to travel). May we request separate beds if sharing a room?
Yes. In most cases, Epitourean can accommodate a request for two beds to be placed in one room. Just make sure to make this request in the comments section of the reservation process.
Does each guestroom have a private bathroom?
Yes. Epitourean partners with the best lodging options in each destination, and private (en suite) bathrooms are a requirement. However, you should inquire as to the configuration of bathrooms should you have a special need. For example, some tours include accommodations in medieval villages, where either a shower or bath(but maybe not both) are present.
Can your tours accommodate my dietary restrictions?
In almost all cases, Epitourean can accommodate dietary choices and restrictions. But we do request that you ask a Culinary Travel Specialist prior to making your reservation so that we can assess your individual situation.
What is your Cancellation Policy?
Generally, you may cancel any tour or getaway package within 30 days of making a reservation, and receive a full refund of any deposit or payments made, as long as the cancellation is made at least 31 days in advance of departure for domestic tours or 61 days in advance of departure for international tours. Cancellations made 30 days or less in advance of departure for domestic packages (60 days or less for international packages) cannot be refunded due to loss of inventory.
If I am unable to use a portion of the tour, can I get a partial refund?
Unfortunately, due to vendor and supplier contracts, we are unable to provide partial refunds for unused portions of any tour or tour component.
Are Transfers included in the Itinerary?
Round-trip transfers from the airport or train station are normally included in our international tours. Transfers to the destination (for both international and domestic tours) are not included in the tour price. Please see the Sample Itinerary. If it mentions that transfers are included, then yes, transfers are included at no additional cost.
What meals and excursions are included in the tour?
The Sample Itinerary should be your reference. If the meal or excursion is described in the Sample Itinerary, then it is included at no additional charge. For those days where it expressly notes Free time, then any optional activities you elect to participate in might have an additional cost. In addition, if the itinerary states "evening on your own," it would imply that you have the opportunity to visit a restaurant of your own choosing, and at your own expense. Is it possible to book pre or post tours or stays through Edible Destinations?
Yes, we often do have optional 2 and 3 night excursions that are priced separately from the tour. We can also assist with pre and post night stays in a hotel if you choose to come in early before the tour starts, or stay on after a tour ends. The price of those hotel stays are not included in the price of the tour, but we would be happy to provide a quote. Simply ask your Culinary Travel Specialist, or submit an inquiry by clicking on the blue "Ask Us a Question" button.
Are Guide or Host Gratuities included in the price of the tour?
Since tipping guidelines and customs vary widely between countries, we do not include gratuities in the price of the tour. Your Culinary Travel Specialist can provide you with recommendations. But the general rule is to tip modestly when you are pleased with a guide’s services, either at the end of the tour, or at the conclusion of a specialty day excursion where you will only be with that guide (or chef) on that day.
Should we plan on any personal expenses during the tour?
All lodging, meals, transfers, classes and excursions mentioned in the Sample Itinerary and Vacation Highlights are included in the price of the tour. However, we highly recommend taking local currency for purchasing personal items, souvenirs, tipping, etc. You can either get the local currency at an airport exchange service, ATM or from your local bank prior to travel. However, you should note that many hosted destinations do not accept credit cards for personal purchases.
Do you recommend Travel Protection?
We recommend that you purchase a travel protection plan to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected. Travel protection plans can include coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation, Trip Delay, Baggage Delay and more.
