Insider’s Culinary Exploration of Gothenburg
Sweden's Culinary Capital plus Seafood Safari

Sweden’s gastronomical reputation has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with chefs giving traditional ingredients a unique twist in modern recipes. Terms such as "locally-sourced" and "foraged" are featured on almost every menu. Nowhere can this be found more evident than in Gothenburg, the city for which the title “Culinary Capital of Sweden” was bestowed by the nation’s rural governmental ministry. Your culinary vacation to Sweden’s second largest city was designed to provide an introduction to the wealth of culinary and cultural treasures this destination has to offer. On this tour you will explore Sweden’s west coast, its history, its cooking, its cuisine and its breathtaking landscapes. Go out with a skipper to haul in his lobster or crab catch, cruise the waterways of the archipelago, trek the cobblestone streets of old town, visit the “Fish Church” and its fishmongers… and learn the mysteries of the Fika, as only the Swedes can turn into a true art form. Isn’t it time that you had a taste of Sweden?

Day 1
Airport Transfers | Arrival & Check-In Welcome to Gothenburg! Your excursion to this city on the west coast, in southwestern Sweden, begins when your driver greets you at Landvetter Airport. After a quick orientation of the city, you will enjoy a leisurely drive to your hotel located right in the heart of the city. After checking in, relax or enjoy a stroll along the canals. This evening is free for your own exploration.
Day 2
Swedish Breakfast Buffet Each morning, relax and enjoy breakfast as you await the day's activities. The hotel serves a delicious Swedish and International breakfast buffet, featuring a wide variety of fresh fruits, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads, pastries and cooked items. Just what you'll need to energize you for the day ahead.
Walking Tour of Historic Gothenburg | Fika This tour is designed especially for Edible Destinations, and provides an insider's view of historic Gothenburg. Your private tour will take you through the city center where you'll discover some of the City's most famous sites, and some not so famous. You will encounter landmarks such as the Feskekôrka, Gustav Adolfs Torg, Domkyrkan and Kronhuset. One of the highlights of this tour will be to visit the Haga district, one of Gothenburg's oldest areas, where you will indulge in a traditional Fika (a serious coffee break enjoyed with friends…and a pastry or two). Rumors have it that this is where you'll find the world's largest cinnamon bun!
Six-Course Swedish Heritage Tasting Dinner This evening you are in for a real treat at Restaurant SK, where Swedish culinary tradition is presented in close proximity to the open kitchen (no walls here). You will directly experience the fragrances and flavors as you watch Master Chef Stefan Karlsson's extremely talented culinary team prepare your exquisite, six-course tasting dinner. Each dish is designed around the season with locally-sourced ingredients, all served with Swedish food heritage in mind. This evening's dining experience requires an investment of at least 2 hours, so bring inquisitive taste buds and your sense of adventure!
Day 3
Swedish Breakfast Buffet | Free Time to Explore Each morning, relax and enjoy breakfast as you await the day's activities. The hotel serves a delicious Swedish and International breakfast buffet, featuring a wide variety of fresh fruits, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads, pastries and cooked items. Just what you'll need to energize you for the day ahead. After breakfast, you will want to plan a day of exploration, relax with optional spa treatments, or simply lounge by the pool.
Hands-On Cooking Class with Chef | 3-Course Dinner Since the West Coast of Sweden is known for its incredible seafood and shellfish, there is no better way to fully appreciate the bounty of this region than to learn, side-by-side with professional chefs, how to prepare these extraordinary dishes. You'll develop your cooking skills at one of Gothenburg's top restaurants, where you will help create a three-course dinner, learning more about the raw ingredients and cooking methods during your instruction. Then you will all sit down to enjoy your culinary efforts while the sommelier demonstrates the wines that marry perfectly with the food. This is another incredible experience that is destined for the pages of your travel diary.
Day 4
Swedish Breakfast Buffet Each morning, relax and enjoy breakfast as you await the day's activities. The hotel serves a delicious Swedish and International breakfast buffet, featuring a wide variety of fresh fruits, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads, pastries and cooked items. Just what you'll need to energize you for the day ahead.
Foodie Tour of Historic Old Town with Lunch In the late morning you will join the group for a lively trek through the markets, such as the indoor fish market of the Feskekôrka ("Fish Church"), so named due to its resemblance to a Gothic church. Learn about both the history and the evolution of Gothenburg's food scene through the wonderful bakeries and fine food shops located in the City's oldest neighborhood. Discover popular food favorites while getting a taste of Gothenburg's rich history and culture. You'll be introduced to places the locals love, and immerse you in the culinary experiences that have made Gothenburg the Food Capital of Sweden.
Dinner Cruise in the Gothenburg Archipelago This evening you will be welcomed aboard the M/S Göteborg for a multi-course dinner. The evening begins in style with a glass of sparkling wine on the upper deck, and continues in the ship's dining room on the lower deck. Lean back and enjoy the stunning scenery and first-class service as you cruise through Gothenburg's Archipelago, and past well known islands, including Styrsö, Donsö and Brännö. This evening's experience is specifically designed to give you a different perspective of the City as it is viewed from the water.
Day 5
Swedish Breakfast Buffet Each morning, relax and enjoy breakfast as you await the day's activities. The hotel serves a delicious Swedish and International breakfast buffet, featuring a wide variety of fresh fruits, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads, pastries and cooked items. Just what you'll need to energize you for the day ahead.
Saluhallen Market Visit Located right in the city center lies Gothenburg's largest market hall which was constructed in the late 1800s. This culinary sanctuary is a sight to behold, as it is as beautiful on the outside as it is on the interior, offering a true taste of Sweden. There are nearly 50 vendors located in this market, offering a wide range of Swedish and International fare. You will also find Saluhallen Market an excellent place to do that souvenir shopping you've been putting off. A small taste of Sweden is naturally the best souvenir you can take back home at the end of a culinary tour.
Check-Out | Afternoon Transfer to Hönö | Hotel Check-In Once you have checked out of your hotel, your driver will escort you to Hönö, approximately one hour to the west of Gothenburg. There you will check into your dockside lodging, and rest up for adventure, a proper description of the day that follows. This evening you will enjoy some leisurely time, and dinner on your own. The restaurant at the hotel is quite nice, and this evening would be a great time to try it out. Of course, there are several other great restaurants within a very short walk.
Day 6
Swedish Breakfast Buffet This morning, relax dockside and enjoy breakfast as you await the day's activities. The hotel serves a delicious Swedish breakfast buffet, featuring a wide variety of fresh fruits, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads, pastries and cooked items. Just what you'll need to energize you for the day ahead.
Seafood Safari | Cooking Class | Dinner Shellfish on the west coast of Sweden is among the best in the world, likely due to its icy cold waters. If you are traveling to Sweden in late September through October, your seafood safari includes a lobster hunt (black gold as the locals like to say). If your travels bring you to Sweden in the spring, then your seafood safari will include crabbing and/or a mussel expedition. On a lobster safari, you'll head out to sea to haul up lobster pots with the careful guidance of a knowledgeable skipper. The crabbing season offers a very similar experience. During mussel season you will visit yet another area to learn how mussels are harvested. Regardless of which crustacean is the subject of today's catch, your expedition will last approximately 3 to 4 hours, at which time you'll head back to shore and receive a cooking lesson on how to prepare the delicious delicacies. Depending upon weather, that could even be over an open fire in salty seawater spiked with white wine. Add in some freshly baked bread and a dollop of regional aioli, and you'll think you have discovered a gastronomic paradise (…and you have!).
Day 7
Swedish Breakfast Buffet | Check-Out This morning, relax dockside and enjoy a Swedish breakfast buffet prior to check-out. Time flies when you're having so much fun, but alas…it is time to check out and depart this delicious, "Edible Destination."
Transfer Back to Gothenburg | Departure Once you have checked out of your hotel, your driver will escort you to the Landvetter Airport for your return home, or journeys onward (slightly over one hour drive time). If you wish to spend more time in Gothenburg, simply let your culinary travel specialist know, and we can make arrangements on your behalf.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Currency is being quoted?
The Currency Code is listed directly after the published amount. If it states USD, then the quoted price is in United States Dollars. If it states CAD, then the quoted price is in Canadian Dollars. If it states EUR, then the quoted price is in European Union Dollars…etc. However, please note that all charges are processed in USD, and Epitourean’s Merchant Bank automatically calculates the currency conversion on the day of the charge.
What does Double Occupancy mean?
Two persons traveling together, and staying in the same room. Tour prices are normally quoted as “per person, double occupancy” in case two people are traveling together and staying in the same room, but paying separately. The cost of the lodging is also shared by two people, thereby reducing costs. This could be a married couple, two friends or relatives.
What is a Single Supplement?
Whenever a person travels alone, the cost of their lodging cannot be shared by another person. When tour products are priced, they are normally stated as “per person, double occupancy.” Whenever a guest occupies a room as a solo, the whole cost of the lodging must be incurred by that one individual. Tour companies accommodate this by charging a Single Supplement. Epitourean does its best to keep the single supplement as low as possible, but it is a real cost that tour companies must absorb, and must pass along to the single traveler.
If I am a Solo Traveler, will I be paired with another person?
Epitourean never pairs a solo traveler with another person without a special request. If you book Single Occupancy, you will have a room entirely to yourself. However, should you wish to be paired with another solo traveler to save on the single supplement, you may make this request. We cannot guarantee that we can accommodate such requests, since it would take another solo traveling on the same tour for the same dates. But if requested, we will certainly try.
Are flights included in the tour price?
No. Flights are never included in the price of our land-only tours. Epitourean does not provide air, rail or sea travel, unless expressly noted in the itinerary.
May I give a culinary tour as a gift?
Yes. Epitourean has a special program designed specifically for this purpose. Our Gift Packages come with features such as special messages to the recipient, gift box option, gift link (without pricing), and floating dates (should you not know when the gift recipient wants to travel). Contact a Culinary Travel Specialist at 800-390-3292 or customerservice@epitourean.com to receive additional information about this unique offering.
May we request separate beds if sharing a room?
Yes. In most cases, Epitourean can accommodate a request for two beds to be placed in one room. Just make sure to make this request in the comments section of the reservation process.
Does each guestroom have a private bathroom?
Yes. Epitourean partners with the best lodging options in each destination, and private (en suite) bathrooms are a requirement. However, you should inquire as to the configuration of bathrooms should you have a special need. For example, some tours include accommodations in medieval villages, where either a shower or bath(but maybe not both) are present.
Can your tours accommodate my dietary restrictions?
In almost all cases, Epitourean can accommodate dietary choices and restrictions. But we do request that you ask a Culinary Travel Specialist prior to making your reservation so that we can assess your individual situation.
If I am unable to use a portion of the tour, can I get a partial refund?
Unfortunately, due to vendor and supplier contracts, we are unable to provide partial refunds for unused portions of any tour or tour component.
Are Transfers included in the Itinerary?
Round-trip transfers from the airport or train station are normally included in our international tours. Transfers to the destination (for both international and domestic tours) are not included in the tour price. Please see the Sample Itinerary. If it mentions that transfers are included, then yes, transfers are included at no additional cost.
What meals and excursions are included in the tour?
The Sample Itinerary should be your reference. If the meal or excursion is described in the Sample Itinerary, then it is included at no additional charge. For those days where it expressly notes Free time, then any optional activities you elect to participate in might have an additional cost. In addition, if the itinerary states "evening on your own," it would imply that you have the opportunity to visit a restaurant of your own choosing, and at your own expense. If you have any question about inclusions, please submit an inquiry by clicking on the blue "Ask Us a Question" button under the price section.
Is it possible to book pre or post tours or stays through Edible Destinations?
Yes, we often do have optional 2 and 3 night excursions that are priced separately from the tour. We can also assist with pre and post night stays in a hotel if you choose to come in early before the tour starts, or stay on after a tour ends. The price of those hotel stays are not included in the price of the tour, but we would be happy to provide a quote. Simply ask your Culinary Travel Specialist, or submit an inquiry by clicking on the blue "Ask Us a Question" button.
Are Guide or Host Gratuities included in the price of the tour?
Since tipping guidelines and customs vary widely between countries, we do not include gratuities in the price of the tour. Your Culinary Travel Specialist can provide you with recommendations. But the general rule is to tip modestly when you are pleased with a guide’s services, either at the end of the tour, or at the conclusion of a specialty day excursion where you will only be with that guide (or chef) on that day.
Should we plan on any personal expenses during the tour?
All lodging, meals, transfers, classes and excursions mentioned in the Sample Itinerary and Vacation Highlights are included in the price of the tour. However, we highly recommend taking local currency for purchasing personal items, souvenirs, tipping, etc. You can either get the local currency at an airport exchange service, ATM or from your local bank prior to travel. However, you should note that many hosted destinations do not accept credit cards for personal purchases.
Do you recommend Travel Protection?
We recommend that you purchase a travel protection plan to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected. Travel protection plans can include coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation/Repatriation, Trip Delay, Baggage Delay and more. For more information on the available plans or to enroll, click on the link below or contact Travelex Insurance Services at 800-228-9792 and reference location number 06-0248.
